Mission

The CT Parents with Differing Cognitive Abilities Workgroup is a state-wide partnership among public and private agencies and families, led by the Department of Children and Families. We believe that parents of all abilities deserve the opportunity to be treated with respect and dignity and we promote systems change and enhance the capacity of professionals to serve parents of all abilities through training and advocacy.

Vision

Connecticut will have a system that recognizes that many families are headed by a parent with differing abilities who will need varying degrees of supportive services throughout their lives.  The system will be family focused, flexible and culturally competent.

Identifying and Working with Parents with Cognitive Limitations Workshops

This  course is designed to provide participants with an overview of challenges and strategies to effectively work with parents with cognitive limitations. The training team is made up of professionals with direct working experience with these parents, within child welfare as well as in community programs and clinical settings. Through this training, participants will increase their ability to identify an individual who may have cognitive limitations. The training will encourage participants to reassess case practice and develop new interventions to enhance service delivery to these individuals and ultimately improve outcomes for families and children.6 CEUs will be available to social workers and LPCs upon completion of the training.
